2018-2019 Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Student Exhibitions

Rebecca Spruill is originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, and received her BA in Printmaking and Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where she received multiple research grants to pursue interdisciplinary research. Spruill creates images that are comical visual descriptions of her self-image and her discomfort in her body. (UN)Real, (UN)Ideal explores the dialogues that surround the unideal body, and the ways in which self-image can become an oppressive, ridiculous and ubiquitous cocoon that influences the way we live our lives. Works in the exhibition are informed by Spruill's personal experience, her childhood absorbing cartoons, and her desire to create open and honest dialogue about our imperfections.

The Mark A. Chapman Gallery on the first floor of Willard Hall opened in 2005. Cheryl Mellenthin and Mark Chapman funded a complete renovation of the former Willard Hall Gallery, increasing the exhibition space to over 1,400 square feet along with 400 square feet dedicated to exhibition preparation and kitchen facilities. The Department of Art hosts BFA and MFA student exhibitions in the gallery as part of graduation requirements each semester. The technology friendly gallery serves not only exhibition purposes, but also provides a location for an active Visiting Artist lecture program.

Jessica Levey is originally from Oakland, California, and received her BFA in sculpture from Sonoma State University, where she participated in many exhibitions both on and off campus. Levey's work is about identity. It involves exploration, self-realization, documentation, and involvement of the viewer, as meaning is altered and proposed within shared or common experience. She analyzes the everyday objects of her existence that she feels impact or reflect who she am, then exploits and celebrates them using craft-like processes.

Mauresa Mitchell is from Houston, Texas, and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Oklahoma State University. While at OSU, she was selected to be a semi-finalist in the Adobe Design Achievement Awards, receiving a silver award in both Editorial and Illustration categories. She has additionally had multiple works accepted into the Adobe Showcase and the National Student Show.

Interested in the power of digital interactive design as a learning tool, Mitchell has explored ways in which museums use interactive design within their exhibits. Investigating visitor experiences and interactive designs, Mitchell has created an extension of her findings through an interactive exhibition of her own. UnBEElievable aims to interact with visitors while creating dialogue about the importance of honeybees in our society. The exhibition is presented as part of the Master of Fine Arts Degree requirements. The show is made possible in part, by funding from KSU Fine Arts Fees, and support from the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Small Grant Program for K-State Graduate Students.
