What is public art and what inspires a person to make it? What does public art offer to a community's discourse? How can a community's public art become a catalyst for inquiry based learning?

These questions were the focus of a project based learning unit in Studio Art Explorations (ART376). This ongoing project started in 2006 and will be expanded each spring semester. Participants in the research, design and creation of this site are listed on the Credits page.

For this project, public art was defined as works of art accessible to the general public and not housed in galleries. Public art can include sculpture, architectural adornment, environmental installations, and much more. Research and discussion revealed areas of public art that were unusual and thought provoking.

So enjoy exploring the public art on the Kansas State campus and around Manhattan. We have provided a starting point from which you can explore.
