VISITING ARTISTS PRESENT EXHIBITION AND DEMONSTRATIONS

MANHATTAN —Kansas State University will welcome three artists as part of the art department’s Visiting Artists Series. Matt Shlian, Richard Elaver and Ryan Buyssens will present an exhibition of their work from January 20 – February 13, 2009 in the Mark Chapman Gallery, first floor Willard Hall. Richard Elaver and Ryan Byssens will present a demonstration at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Willard Hall, room 217.

The exhibition, titled “Make Shift,” features three artists working between traditional specializations and demonstrates the art of negotiating the mistranslation of information as geometry, form, image and text. Shlian is a paper engineer and print-maker, working with 3D paper sculptures and digital drawings. Buyssens is a sculptor and video artist working with animatronics, while Elaver is a metal smith and designer, working with scripting in 3D modeling.

In addition to featuring their artwork, the project will also feature demonstrations and lectures. Elaver and Buyssens will present a demonstration of their 3D modeling techniques using 3D “printing” and “growing” their artwork through 3D digital software and fabricating. The demonstration and lecture, as well as the exhibit, are free and open to the public.

In addition to his jewelry, Richard Elaver has professional experience in the design of medical equipment, consumer products, sporting goods and furniture. He is currently an assistant professor of design at Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne, teaching beginning and advanced 3D design courses. He holds a master of fine arts from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and a bachelor’s of science in art from the University of Wisconsin.

Ryan Buyssens is Rapid Prototyping Studio Manager at California College of the Arts in Oakland, California and has served as an adjunct professor at Saginaw Valley State University and Indiana University, among others, where he taught courses in art appreciation and courses in two and three dimensional art.
